IOP City Council Highlights - February

Standing Committees

  • Council awarded a contract in the amount of $25,000 for the July 4th fireworks show. The City hired the same vendor from the last 4 years.
  • Council approved a five (5) year extension to the JLG Enterprise contract for beach garbage and recycling collection services. This vendor helps keep our beach and Front Beach commercial district clean.
  • Council approved an expenditure in the amount of $2,000 for the purchase of reusable bags for tourism promotion and to encourage beach cleanup when visiting the beach.
  • Council approved spending $4,000 for advertising the new beach rules which prohibit smoking on the beach and beach access paths and using single use plastic bags, plastic straws, and Styrofoam products.
  • Council awarded a contract to Trident Construction in the amount of $5,256,159 for the construction of the repairs to the Public Safety Building. These repairs will make the Public Safety Building safer and extend its useful life.
  • Council approved a renewal of an agreement with The Palms Hotel for use of the municipal parking lot.
  • Council approved an amount not to exceed $15,000 for the installation of a pervious patio area behind the public restrooms on Front Beach. This patio will be a useful public gathering space and make the beach even more welcoming.
  • Council approved an exemption from the noise ordinance for a 21 gun salute during a Veteran's and First Responder Blessing Ceremony on November 7th, the salute will consist of 3 riflemen firing 7 rounds each.

Ordinances

First Reading

  • Council held first reading on an ordinance that would make it unlawful to flee from a public safety officer under certain conditions [Ordinance 2020-01]. This ordinance brings the City into alignment with other nearby municipalities.

Resolutions

  • Council approved a resolution to authorize the consumption of beer and wine only at the Front Beach Fest on March 7, 2020. The festival is slated to take place for 12PM to 4PM and will feature local restaurants, food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, activities for kids, and a live band.

Executive Session

  • Council held an executive session to discuss negotiations incident to proposed contractual arrangements related to the marina restaurant lease. Upon returning to open session council chose to approve extending the exclusive negotiations period with the IOP Families group for an additional 30 days beginning March 10, 2020.
