SCDOT Road Work on Palm Boulevard between 21st & 41st Avenues

This spring, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will begin micro-surface work on Palm Boulevard between 21st and 41st Avenue. Micro-surfacing consists of the application of a thin, tough layer of asphalt meant to renew the road surface, seal minor cracks and extend the life of the pavement.

SCDOT has contracted with Hudson Construction Company to perform this work. Construction on the island is expected to begin and end between Monday, June 11th and Wednesday, June 13th. Micro-surfacing operations hours will be between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The construction schedule largely depends on the weather.

Parking on the public right-of-way along Palm Boulevard between 21st and 41st Avenue will not be allowed during the day of construction so vehicles must be moved prior to that day. Signs indicating "No Parking" will be placed in the area the day prior to construction. Vehicles parked in the public right-of-way along Palm Boulevard between 21st and 41st Avenue the day of construction will be towed at the expense of the owner of the vehicle. To alleviate the inconvenience this may cause residents and visitors, the City will offer free parking in the Municipal Parking Lots, located on Pavilion Drive, on the day of construction.

Prior to the start of the project, Hudson Construction Company will be distributing door hangers to the residences along the construction area which includes information about the construction schedule and instructions related to parking and sprinkler systems. Also, two electronic message boards will be deployed on the island in advance of construction displaying construction and detour information so that citizens have time to make any appropriate travel accommodations as necessary.

A detour route will be in place the day of construction:

  • Northeast-bound traffic on Palm Boulevard towards Wild Dunes will continue down Palm Boulevard.
  • Traffic exiting the Wild Dunes area towards Charleston will be directed right at the 41st Avenue stop sign towards Waterway Boulevard, then directed to turn left on Waterway Boulevard towards the 21st Avenue intersection.
  • 23rd through 27th Avenue at Palm Boulevard will be closed.
  • 28th Avenue at Palm Boulevard will remain open with a flagging operation.
  • 29th through 33rd Avenue at Palm Boulevard will be closed.
  • 34th Avenue at Palm Boulevard will remain open with a flagging operation.
  • 35th through 41st Avenue at Palm Boulevard will be closed.

The Isle of Palms Public Works Department does not expect significant impacts to the garbage collection operation.

Motorists are advised to use caution when driving in work zones and to permit extra time as travel delays are possible.
