On April 7, 2008, the City of Isle of Palms was awarded state approval of its Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan, including Appendices.

The Isle of Palms has been in the news recently regarding the proposed
Ordinance 2008-03. In summary, the Ordinance addresses the issue of “the abandonment of personal property on the beach and leaving the beach in an unsafe condition.”  Contrary to many reports, the impetus of this Ordinance was never to prevent families and children from building sand castles on the beach. Rather, this Ordinance was drafted as a result of a year-long discussion with the environmental community, who brought forth concerns about the abandonment of large tents, umbrellas and beach chairs, and the use of large shovels to dig crater-sized holes which become public safety hazards and pose significant obstacles for nesting loggerhead turtles. The environmental community brought these concerns to the City through the Public Works and Public Safety Committees, and, in an attempt to solve the problem, City Council passed First Reading of the Ordinance at the March 25, 2008 Regular Meeting.  The Ordinance is currently under careful consideration by Council, who can make modifications to further clarify the Ordinance before Second Reading and Ratification.
