Council Approves 6-month Suspension of Plastics & Styrofoam Ban

City Council approved a 6 month suspension of enforcement of the single-use plastics and Styrofoam ban. City Council hopes that this temporary suspension will help mitigate some of the hardships that businesses are facing due to the worldwide supply chain issues.

Isle of Palms businesses will be able to provide disposable food service ware or polystyrene/plastic foam products, including cups, plates, bowls, clamshells, etc., for a period of 6 months. The temporary suspension will expire on May 17, 2022.  Single use plastic bags will continue to be prohibited from distribution.

Disposable food service ware is defined by the Code as follows: Disposable food service ware is interchangeable with "to go" packaging and "food packaging material" and includes, but is not limited to: all containers, clamshells, bowls, plates, trays, cartons, cups, straws, stirrers, and other items designed for one-time use associated with prepared foods, including without limitation, service ware for takeout foods and/or leftovers from partially consumed meals prepared by food providers.

Disposable food service ware, single use plastic bags and polystyrene/foam products will continue to be prohibited on the beach.

The City of Isle of Palms remains steadfast in its commitment to the protection and conservation of our beach and waterways.
