The City of Isle of Palms offers daily use of beach wheelchairs at no charge. Use of a beach wheelchair is on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations are taken for wheelchairs provided by the City. Beach wheelchairs are located at the Public Safety Building, located at 30 J.C. Long Boulevard, Isle of Palms, SC 29451.
Beach wheelchairs are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. They must be returned no later than 8:00 p.m. the day of the rental. The IOP Fire Department does not pick up or deliver beach wheelchairs.
How to Request a Beach Wheelchair:
Citizens interested in renting a beach wheelchair must submit a Beach Wheelchair Rental Form in person on the second floor at the Public Safety Building, Police Department side. The form is available on site. The Communications Specialist on duty will make a copy of the renter's driver's license and credit card. Call the Police Department's non-emergency phone number if you have additional questions: (843) 886-6522.
The beach wheelchair will be available at the Fire Department Apparatus Bay at 30 JC Long Boulevard.
If the beach wheelchair is not returned, the City will charge the cost of replacement to the credit card on file. The cost to replace the beach wheelchair is $3,000.
Isle of Palms County Park Wheelchairs
The park also provides standard beach wheelchairs free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Reserve a Waymaker Offroad Wheelchair
In addition to the standard beach wheelchairs, an off-road wheelchair is available for reservation thanks to the generosity of Waymaker Offroad Wheelchairs. Based in Hartsville, SC, Waymaker Offroad Wheelchairs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with mobility impairments enjoy outdoor experiences with independence.
Visit the Waymaker Offroad Wheelchairs website to reserve the chair. When you arrive at the park, just let the gatekeeper know you have a reservation confirmation.
Reservations do not include park admission. Please be aware that beach parking may reach capacity on weekends and holidays during the peak season. Make sure to arrive early in the day, if possible, to ensure you can gain entry to the park, especially if you have reserved the chair ahead of time.
