IOP City Council Highlights - June

June 26, 2018

Standing Committees

  • City Council approved the Worrell 1000 Reunion Race to be held on May 12-13, 2019 at Front Beach as a City-sponsored event. This event is a 1,000-mile catamaran race from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Virginia Beach, Virginia, with a checkpoint in the Isle of Palms on the evening of May 12th. The race will include no more than 30 catamarans from the United States, Australia, Europe and South Africa.
  • City Council approved a recommendation from the Personnel Committee to accept the job description for the newly created position of Public Works Assistant Director of Maintenance and Facilities. This position will supervise drainage projects and City building improvements.
  • City Council recognized Patrol Officer Joshua Phillips as the City's Employee of the Month for his exemplary acts in preventing a young woman from jumping from the Connector Bridge.
  • City Council unanimously approved pursuing a General Permit for sand fencing island-wide. If the permit is granted, individual property owners will be allowed to seek permission from the City, rather than SCDHEC-OCRM, to install sand fencing. Property owners will be required to follow state guidelines and regulations, but this action should facilitate and streamline the approval process.

Ordinances & Resolutions

oRDINANCE 2018.05 & oRDINANCE 2018.10 – Managed beach parking plan

The City received the encroachment permit from SC Department of Transportation, allowing City Council to move forward with passing two ordinances that put in place changes to the Managed Beach Parking Plan. These changes are a direct result of citizens' input and include: Parallel parking only on Palm Boulevard between 21st and 40th Avenue, no double parking on Palm Boulevard between 21st and 40th Avenue, year-round enforcement of the parking plan, includes the unregulated portion of 41st Avenue between Frank Sottile and the terminus of 41st Avenue in the Residential Parking District and creates an exception that allows resident boat trailer parking in the same area and prohibits boat trailer parking on Waterway Boulevard between 41st Avenue and Forest Trail.

The City is requesting bids for the fabrication and installation of streets signs associated with these changes. The deadline for the submission of bids is 11:00 a.m., July 23, 2018. The goal with these changes is to increase public safety and protect the residential character of the island.

Resolution establishing the "leola hanbury award"

City Council adopted a resolution to establish the "Leola Hanbury Award" to recognize City employees for their outstanding public service. Leola Hanbury was a former City Council member and beloved City resident who was dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for island residents and who was a friend of many employees of the City. By her Last Will and Testament, Ms. Hanbury bequeathed a generous gift to the City of Isle of Palms to be used for such public and civic purposes as the City Council may decide.
