City Council Honors Community Advocate Elizabeth “Betsy” Russell Smiley
This week, Isle of Palms City Council approved a resolution honoring Elizabeth “Betsy” Russell Smiley, who passed away peacefully on February 14, 2024. She was a tireless and outspoken advocate for the Isle of Palms community, particularly during the recovery efforts following Hurricane Hugo. Betsy lived a life devoted to service. She volunteered with East Cooper Meals on Wheels for over 20 years, delivering meals to homebound Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island residents.
She also served three terms as an elected Isle of Palms City Council member. Her sense of humor, kindness, energy, compassion and graciousness has enriched those fortunate enough to know her. The Isle of Palms community recognizes with great admiration and appreciation the contributions of Betsy Smiley throughout her life, and extends its condolences to her family.
