Statement on Fire Department Staffing Levels

The Isle of Palms Fire Department currently staffs 2 fire engines with 2 personnel each, 2 ladder trucks with 2 personnel each, a pick-up truck with 1 Battalion Chief and a pick-up truck with 1 Captain. The department has grown over the years and now staffs 10 personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 3 additional personnel 5 days a week.

The City has an automatic aid agreement with Sullivan's Island Fire Department, a mutual aid agreement with all Fire Departments throughout Charleston County, and participates in the Statewide Mutual Aid agreement and Firefighter Mobilization Program.

The Isle of Palms Fire Department responds to a wide variety of emergencies. While the overall number fluctuates year to year, there has been no drastic increase in call volume.

The City's Fire Department personnel have a very high save rate during emergency responses. Most of the saves have been near drownings and serious medical emergencies, including cardiac arrests. The Department also maintains equipment to a high standard.

Also, the City has proudly maintained an ISO rating of 1 since 2017, which is the best possible rating and represents how well-protected a community is by their fire department.

"The City is very proud of our Fire Department. They are all exceptional, dedicated and highly trained public servants. They constantly go above and beyond the call of duty and serve the Isle of Palms community with the utmost courage, respect and professionalism," stated Mayor Carroll.
